60th Annual Sacramento Autorama

Well for the first time I was on the other side of things and entered a few of my bikes into the Bike-O-Rama room at the 60th Annual Sacramento Autorama. The Orange Sickle took 2 awards Best Pinstriping and 2nd place

Trophy for Full Custom.

The Penny Racer took a 2nd place trophy for Mild Custom. Both the Southsyde Cycle (Full Custom) and Cherry Mary (Suede class) received participant plaques (3rd place)

What says Merry Christmas better than a custom built beach cruiser bicycle? Well that's what a previous customer wanted to do for her Mom. This was a quick build (1 week) I had a freshly powder coated white Electra frame with all the trimmings in stock. The bike has aluminum rims since it's new home will be in Santa Cruz the home of rusted beach cruiser bikes.

Here's a picture of a few shop projects. The Satin Black Fixed Gear Schwinn sitting on the fab table was just built as a demo and the Copper Schwinn Board Track inspired bike will probably be another motorized bike project as well. I'll post more pics of these builds soon.

The Frame Dragger

This bike started as an Electra "Rat Fink" but that changed after it was cut in half. These bikes are some of the most comfortable bikes to ride so I didn't want to mess with the riding geometry so I kept the bottom bracket, and seat close to the stock position. The bike was cut 6" in front of the seat and right after the bottom bracket. I had tubing bent the way I envisioned it and went to work. I wanted this bike as low as possible but still ridable. I welded up the complete back half and then metal finished it so I could get it powder coated. The bike has 26" Quikspeed Billet wheels, Rockwerks cranks, Shimano disc brake, Aluminum Robinson BMX bars and front forks came from a West Coast Chopper bike. This bike's first ride was the San Jose Bike Partie's October ride (23 miles)... these bikes aren't just for show.

The "Debutante"

This is a 20" Roadmaster Debutante, I rebuilt this bike in 2 weeks. It was done for a family friend and given as a suprise wedding present. This bike was painted so we tried to match the color as close to the stock paint as close as possible (Thanks Sturken Autobody). Installed some fresh white walls, white grips, new pedals, chrome fenders, and it was ready for another 30 years of wheelies and skidouts (tires permitting).

This bike was built for my wife's friend Erin. She was easy and just said "Make it all black" So I mocked the bike up made sure it was good to go and then sent it all off to Zenitram for powder coat. The wheels were hand built by me, seat and grips were factory Electra, Kruzer King triple tree front fork, Electra black wall tires and the last detail added was her last name on the chain gaurd and intials on the front fender cut out of vinyl.

This bike is a "Schwinn Ruler" which is a newer Aluminum frame Schwinn cruiser. I kept this one simple, the bike was orginally orange so I pulled it apart and it was powder coated Silver by Zenitram Powder Coatings and put back together.

"Heartbreaker"

The Heartbreaker was an idea that my customer Jenn came up with. My job was to find a bike to start with and make her concept a reality. I found a Dyno Von Franco on Craigslist which of course was an adventure in itself . The bike had seen better days and doesn't suprise me after seeing the yard it sat in. I pulled the bike part including the rims, then dropped off everything to be powder coated satin black over at Zenitram. I assembled it, then took it over to Gene at Worth Works for him to add some lines and of course "Heartbreaker" on the chain guard.

This is Jarred's Dyno Roadster, he came up with the color scheme and I did all the disassembly/reassembly. The frame was predrilled for the addition of a 3 speed hub so that way I can run the cables through the frame. We've got more plans for this bike so stay tuned.

Ride SFO Expo November 2008

Loaded up the Southsyde hauler and drove out to the Cow Palace for the Ride SFO Bike Expo. Brought a few bikes to show/sell and ton of vintage parts. It was a huge turnout, I was one of the select few selling vintage Schwinn parts so I was busy all day.

I came across an ad posted on the Sacramento Craigslist page that read "Schwinn parts for sale" So

after a few phone calls and emailed pictures I knew this was a deal to good to pass up. I brought Chuck for Bicycle Express along with me for his knowledge of old Schwinn's. It was a long day but well worth the time. We filled Chuck's entire 21ft car trailer, his Tundra bed and even the extra cab was filled with parts.

This was the bike I always wanted.... saw it on craigslist and 20 minutes laster I was on my way to Fremont to pick it up. The bike had some very minor flaws and for that I let it go and it was one of my biggest regrets ever! I will own another one.

I wanted to add something to this bike cause of the huge canvas it was but I couldn't think of what? So in preparation I wet sanded down the frame, dropped it off to Gene over at Worth Works and said do what you want. When I picked up the bike I was blown away how good it looked.....

"Southsyde Special" May 2005

I was going for an old school bobber motorcycle look on this one... I went with a Maroon Powder Coat on this bike, gave it the standard 24" rim and 24X3 Electra Fattio in the rear laced into a Sturmey Archer 3 speed. Up from the 26" rim was straight laced and wrapped in a Richey Smoothie tire and bolted in between an aftermarket Springer. I also used a Schwinn Horn Tank and Deluxe Feather chain gaurd. This bike was sold on Ebay to a lucky bidder in Paris, France! Check out the pics.

I built these Bikes for my Powder Coater Jim from SRS. He just wanted simple cruisers so I went to work. Both Bikes were Schwinn Frames and I used basic replacement components. The Blue bike used Candy Blue powder coat, and the white seat was made by Kruiser King. The Green bike was a Candy Green, used a black Kruiser King seat. Both Bikes wer finished off with a Schwinn Cruiser decal set.

Schwinn Retro Chop March 2005

Built with a little inspration from Brian over at Cooper Cruiser's. The base for this project was a 1964 Schwinn heavy weight frame. The Front end was from a Nirve Chopper, with a standard 26" rim and Dyno Fireball Tire under it. The rear had a 24x3" Dyno Fireball Tire and 24" rim laced into a Shimano 3 speed controlled by a Jockey Shifter. The Bike was powder coated Candy Blue by SRS Powder Coatings, and then Gene Worth of Worth Works laid down some Cream Scallops on the Frame & Fenders. This bike was one of my favorites but I can't keep them all... this one sold on Ebay and shipped to Seattle, Washington!

Guns N Roses...part 2 March 2005

After riding my first fully restored Schwinn Cruiser it was time to change it up.....I decided to Change the frame from Red to Black with Red Rims and accent parts. I widened the rear frame and put a 24" rim with a 24x3" Dyno Fireball Tire and laced in a Nexus 7 speed hub. The front of the bike had 30" tall Kruiser King forks with a 26" rim, Dyno Fireball Tire and red head light. This was a solid riding bike. I sold this one on Ebay.

I'm still not sure what kind of bike this was? It was refinished for a customer who wanted to restore her Husbands bike that he had owned all his life. We kept it simple, powder coated it bright red, replaced all the chrome, new seat, grips and lastly some fresh white walls.

Candy Purple 52' Schwinn November 2004

This Bike is a 1952 Women's Schwinn. It had seen better days to say the least. I gave it a full rebuild from the ground up. This bike was built for my Powder Coater's Mom.

The bike was powder coated "Candy Purple" with "Chrome" powder coated accents. Went with an aftermarket rear rack, fenders and Springer.

Score of the Century 1968 Orange Krate October 2004

Here's the story.... I saw a posting on Craigslist for a 1968 Orange Krate for $200 so of course I called right away with no luck cause it said the number was disconnected so I figured it was joke. I came up with the idea of reposting the ad title and mentioning the phone number is bad please call me.... sure enough a day later I get a call saying yes the number was wrong I'm sorry... good thing I saw your ad so I packed up the wife and headed over the Golden Gate Bridge to pick it up. I've been offered over $1,000 for it but I won't sell it.
The only thing I have done to this bike was disassembled it to fully clean and regrease everything, installed a new "Pete's Seat", new brake/shifter cables and also updated the tires with a repop Schwinn Slik on the rear and the standard 16" on the front

Cherry Mary built April 2004

This bike was built as a suprise for my wife. I knew she wanted her own personalized cruiser so I picked her brain to figure out what it would look like..... After getting a pretty good I idea I went to work and that's when "Cherry Mary" was built.
The Frame was a 1955 Schwinn, took it down to Jim at SRS powder coatings where he sprayed the Bike Satin Black and the wheels/hubs were done in Cherry Red. Here you can see the Cherry's done by Gene Worth of Worth Works.
I laced up a Nexus 7 speed hub in the rear wheel, Schwinn AS front springer fork, Schwinn Tank with a working horn, Schwinn Feather Chain Guard, and lastly the Nirve Leapard Seat and Grips. Pinstriping laid down by Gene Worth of Worth Works.

This was my wife Jaclyn's first bike we bought back in 2003. When 3 of them showed up to the first bike show, the bike was on the auction block.

We did make a few changes before it was sold, I threw out the Chrome sprocket for a black one, laced up a Nexus 4 speed hub in the rear, Installed a Chrome Springer and Headlight. Jaclyn got her hands dirty and made her own streamers.....

The last addition before it was delivered to the new owner were some Dice painted on the front and rear fenders. Dice was painted by Gene Worth of Worth Works.

The Gold Bike aka "Southsyde Cycle"

The bike started as a bare frame which I bought at the Bicycle Shop in Santa Cruz sometime in 2003. The frame was a Dyno Roadster copy.

After riding the bike for a month or two I decided it was time to customize it. The first thing I did was plate the front frame in with sheet metal, I welded it up and Mike did the bondo work.
Striped the frame down again, I hand bent & welded the spider web frame gusset, changed the wheels black 26" powder coated gloss black, Kruiser King forks, Frisco 3 piece cranks & neck....
A few more small changes before it was painted. I welded on a Motorcycle fender and hand built a webbed fender support, changed the wheels again to a 24" rear with a Nexus 7 speed hub, ran shifter cable through the frame, front Shimano Disc brake on Mountain bike front fork, webbed sprocket and then the bike was painted House of Kolors Solar Gold with some Heavy Flake. Bike was painted by Joey Stockdale.

The Gun's N Roses Bikes

These bikes were both 1981 Chicago made Schwinn Cruiser's. My old room-mate Mike & I rebuilt these bikes. They were bought on Ebay and were supposedly owned by the band Gun's N Roses. The owner sent us a letter of Authenticity if that means anything? Either way these bikes needed a complete rebuild. We stripped them down to nothing and had both bikes powder coated by Jim over at SRS Industrial Coatings, the cranks, sprokets, bearing cups, necks, kickstands were all re-chromed by $uperior Chrome. I rubuilt the S2 wheels, and Mike bought some all black ones. Here's a shot of the bikes in Santa Cruz.

Schwinn American bought in 2001

This was my first Schwinn I bought off of Craigslist sometime in 2001. I pulled it apart, stripped it to bare metal, painted it with "rattle can", polished the chrome, changed the back fender, put in new bearings, bigger handle bars and sold it on Ebay! I knew nothing about Schwinn bikes prior to getting this one, I learned the front fender was installed backwards after someone told me when it was posted on ebay. This was the start to my bicycle addiction.
